Bulldog supporters filled the Bridgeport gym on Thursday night to watch the Bulldogs go head-to-head with the Hemingford Bobcats to advance into the second round of the Western Trails Conference Tournament. Although combating sickness through the week, the Bulldogs came out on top with a 41-23 point win.
The Bulldogs took the lead right away in the first quarter, and as the game progressed into the second half, the Bobcat defense couldn’t shut down the Bulldog offense. Destry S led his team with 12 points, while Cory F followed with 10 points. Other point scorers were Jase D with 7 points, Hardan K with 6 points, Trevor Z with 2 poitns, Nick R with 2 points, and Junior T with 2 points.
Advancing into the second round, the Bulldogs battled the Mitchell Tigers to go into the championship game. Determined to win, the Bulldogs came out on top once again with a 56-44 victory.
Through the game the Tigers and the Bulldogs went back and forth, but the Bulldogs went on a run in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Tigers 19-6. They pulled away when the Tigers were forced to foul, putting the Bulldogs to the charity stripe. The Bulldogs shot 15-20 from the line.
Destry S led his team for the second night in a row, scoring in double digits with 16 points. Jase D and Cory F also scored in double digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Other Bulldogs who added points to the board were Bryce D with 6 points, Pierce F and Hardan K each with 4 points, and Trevor Z with 1 point.
On Saturday night, the Bulldogs faced the Kimball Longhorns for the third time this season. The Bulldogs took the lead in the first few minutes of the game, but could not stay on top, although they put up a good fight.
Longhorn shooters did well separating themselves from the Bulldogs with their three point shots. Two treys by Dean in the second quarter along with 2 baskets by Sterkel kept the Bulldogs in the game at halftime with a score of 16-24.
Late in the 3rd quarter, the Bulldogs put ten points on the board, but the Longhorns 19 points for the quarter separated the scores even farther until the point difference was too great for the Bulldogs to make up for in the 4th quarter.
Sterkel and Dean scored in double digits to finish the night with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Bryce D and Cory F added 3 points each, while Junior T and Pierce F each had 2 points.
The boys will be in action again on Friday night as they travel to take on the Gordon/Rushville Mustangs. Good luck!!
