Boys Basketball at Sub Districts

We made baskets. That was the huge difference as our guys defeated Garden County last Monday night 46-33. We shot a great percentage and rebounded the ball very well.
Bayard beat us 41-32 the next night to end our season at 5-15. Our players took advantage of having played the night before and played a little better against a very good Bayard team. I commend a very tough minded, experienced and talented Bayard team as they were able to finish down the stretch. Bo Pelini said it best after a couple of tough losses by UNL this season; “you have to finish the deal in close games!”
Having said that, commendations to this team regarding their effort, development as a team, and ability to “hang in there.” They demonstrated an uncanny ability to “control tempo” and dictate how and where their opponents were going to play/shoot from on the floor. Our defense was not necessarily a “bad” defense but mostly we only allowed a certain number of opportunities for our opponents to score! We rebounded well on missed shots and on the offensive boards. Untimely turnovers and a lack of scoring consistency were weaknesses that we need to improve upon. Bayard took a lot of good shots but missed. We got the score down to a 2-3 point game with plenty of time remaining, but our lack of experience “reared” its ugly head. Yet, this groups’ “soft body” and “hard hands” defense was a late season defensive approach along with their execution of a game plan speaks highly of their efforts. In conclusion, this was a fun and exciting group to coach. There are not enough words for me to express how much I appreciated their “stick-to-itiveness!” Thanks guys.
