State Tests Results

September 10, 2011

Results of the Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) tests are now available. Last year, students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in the state-wide math test for the first time. The state-wide reading test is now two years old. NeSA is a one-time, drop-in and check of student performance on the math and reading standards. This test replaces STARS, the previous system for measuring student performance on the standards.
Student scores placed them in one of three categories; below standard, meets standard, or exceeds standard.
Seventy-two percent of our students met or exceeded the math standards. This compares to an average of sixty-two percent state-wide. Nearly all of our grade levels performed well above the state average. Only one grade level performed slightly below the state-wide average. Two grade levels had more than 80% of the student meeting or exceeding the standards.
Seventy-one percent of our students met or exceeded the reading standards. This compares to an average of seventy-two percent state-wide. While most grade levels performed very near the state average, seventy-four percent of our juniors, compared to sixty-seven state-wide, met or exceeded the reading standards.
Students in grades 4 and 8 also participated in the State-wide Writing Assessment. Both grade levels performed very well. Ninety-four percent of our 4th graders passed the test and ninety-five percent of the 8th graders passed. The 11th graders participated in a pilot of the new on-line version of the writing test so they did not receive scores.
This information serves several purposes. It will be the basis for our Federal Adequate Yearly Progress rating and it is also the information used to determine the Persistently Lowest Achieving Schools (PLAS). Both of these ratings will be available to the public in the State of the Schools Report released in October. More importantly, our teachers have received information concerning the performance of individual students. This information will be used to help us to better meet the instructional needs of each student.
Individual student/parent reports were sent home with students on Monday, August 29. If you do not receive a report, or if you have any questions, please call Michelle Keszler at 262-1470.
